WASHINGTON D.C. The Nuclear Innovation Alliance (NIA) shared the following statement in response to yesterday’s Senate Environment and Public Works Committee oversight hearing of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC). This statement may be attributed to NIA President and CEO, Judi Greenwald:

“We were pleased to see each of the Commissioners state that the NRC remains committed to safety as its essential goal. Within that context, NIA has seen the agency make progress to become a more effective and efficient regulator as it implements the Accelerating Deployment of Versatile, Advanced Nuclear for Clean Energy (ADVANCE) Act of 2024 and Executive Order 14300 (Ordering the Reform of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission). These actions demonstrate the agency’s dedication to reform and must be continued. As we have said before, we urge Congress and the Administration to provide continuous and robust resources to the NRC.”

“With growing concerns about workforce capacity as the agency receives numerous applications for new technologies, the Commission’s commitment to shifting the workforce for the long term—developing a reorganization plan and a pipeline of new hires under existing statutory authorities and hiring exemptions—comes at a crucial time. We welcome the development of a new memorandum of understanding (MOU) between the NRC and the Department of Defense (DoD) and the continuation of the existing MOU between the NRC and the Department of Energy (DOE). NIA believes this marks a critical moment of interagency collaboration to enable the deployment of new nuclear technologies. The NRC should continue to collaborate with DOE and DoD to promote consistent safety standards, minimize duplication of effort, and ensure a smooth transition from DOE and DoD authorization of reactors to NRC licensing of commercial reactors.”
