WASHINGTON D.C. The Nuclear Innovation Alliance (NIA) shared the following statement in response to yesterday’s Senate Environment and Public Works Committee oversight hearing of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC). This statement may be attributed to NIA President and CEO, Judi Greenwald:

NIA applauds the recent confirmation of Ted Garrish as the Assistant Secretary for Nuclear Energy at the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE). Assistant Secretary Garrish brings decades of experience in government and nuclear policy, and a clear, focused vision that underscores the importance of building, fueling, exporting, and responsibly managing nuclear energy systems in the United States.

In his opening statement to the Senate Energy and National Resources committee on 4/30/2025, Assistant Secretary Garrish outlined a four-part vision for the Office of Nuclear Energy.

  • Demonstrations: “First and foremost, as soon as feasible, we need to build a new reactor.”
  • Fuel Availability:  “The development of a robust domestic enrichment industry is essential for our national security.”
  • Nuclear Energy Exports: “We should evaluate the status of the international market for U.S. nuclear developers…to ensure we maintain strong positioning for U.S. products and services”
  • Nuclear Waste Management: “We need to begin to solve the nuclear waste dilemma and work with Congress, communities, and states on solutions.”

These four pillars are aligned with NIA’s priorities, creating momentum for nuclear innovation moving forward. Now, DOE and industry must capitalize on this momentum and deliver on the vision that Assistant Secretary Garrish has set forth.
