WASHINGTON D.C. The Nuclear Innovation Alliance (NIA) shared the following statement in response to the passage of the FY 2024 appropriations package, which includes funding for domestic development of high-assay, low-enriched uranium (HALEU) production capacity. This statement may be attributed to NIA Executive Director Judi Greenwald:
“NIA welcomes the passage of appropriations legislation that includes funding for development of domestic high-assay, low-enriched uranium (HALEU) production capacity. Ensuring a reliable and robust commercial supply of HALEU fuel is critical to the successful commercialization and deployment of clean, reliable advanced nuclear energy and to reducing and eventually eliminating our dependency on Russian nuclear fuel suppliers.
“Our recent report, “Characterizing an Emerging Market for High-Assay, Low-Enriched Uranium Production”, outlined the necessity for additional federal funding to catalyze domestic HALEU production. This legislation will provide the necessary long-term funding to support development of new domestic HALEU infrastructure and increase our capability to meet future energy demands with domestic nuclear fuel production. Advanced nuclear technology is a climate technology and it is vital that the U.S. continue to provide strong leadership in creating the conditions for success of the American nuclear industry.
