Press Release
Nuclear Innovation Alliance
December 14th, 2023

WASHINGTON D.C. - Today the Nuclear Innovation Alliance (NIA) released an update to their original 2021 report, “Advanced Nuclear Energy Guide for State Policymakers.” The Guide serves as an introduction to advanced nuclear energy projects and policies for state-level policymakers and stakeholders. It describes advanced reactor technology and its benefits, provides an overview of enabling federal policies, and reviews state options to incentivize local development of advanced reactors. The report also contains case studies of emerging, state-specific advanced nuclear projects including:

  • The Nuclear Alternative Project in Puerto Rico;
  • Nuclear Energy Innovation in Texas;
  • Support for New Nuclear in Virginia;
  • Energy Northwest’s plans in Washington;  and
  • The Natrium Project in Wyoming.

The Brief also includes a compendium of topical briefs that elaborate on the characteristics of advanced reactors with respect to safety, economic benefits, waste remediation, the flexibility and dispatchability of advanced nuclear power, and its timing and development.

NIA Executive Director Judi Greenwald shared the following statement underscoring the significance of the new NIA resource in guiding ongoing initiatives that foster innovation and deployment of advanced nuclear energy in the United States:

"As advanced reactors progress swiftly towards the demonstration phase, companies are actively considering optimal locations for their inaugural projects. Notably, states are increasingly assuming a pivotal role in shaping the landscape for the deployment of new nuclear reactors through innovative policies and expressed project interest. Those states at the forefront of this movement stand to gain substantial social and economic advantages from advanced nuclear energy, including the creation of high-paying jobs within their communities and the realization of ambitious state-level climate objectives. This updated Guide is designed to equip local and state policymakers with insights into why early adopters are embracing the next generation of nuclear energy and its associated benefits, offering a roadmap for the advancement of nuclear energy innovation across the United States."
